Meet Headteacher, Lynne

Meet Headteacher, Lynne

Lynne has been the Headteacher at St Mary's CofE (VA) Primary School for the last four years, and is excited to be starting her new role as Headteacher at Longmeadow Primary School in September. We asked her about her career so far.

Can you describe your journey into teaching (how did you qualify, what have been the key steps along the way)?

Having originally worked for British Rail, I quickly realised transport was not for me and teaching was my passion! I completed a PGCE and I taught in an F.E. College and secondary schools before a primary Headteacher suggested that primary might be the area for me and I have never looked back. My journey to Headship has been a long, but very enjoyable one. The advice I always give is:
When you're working in a school and think, ‘I wouldn't do it like that' then it's time to think about leadership.

My mantra is, 'every child only gets one chance at education' and that's what drives me. Being a Headteacher is a privilege, but not for the faint-hearted!

What support do you get as a headteacher in Hertfordshire?

Support from the DSEA, who is always available. Local Headteacher networks and HFL Education advisory support. Also, in church schools the Diocesan Education team and, of course, my Governing Board.

As a headteacher, what are you looking for when recruiting new teachers?

I look for teachers who are excited to be in the classroom and who are keen to learn and develop. Over my time in Headship, I have had the privilege of working with many ECTs and supported them to grow in confidence and self-belief. Equally, I love recruiting experienced teachers who are still passionate about supporting children to learn and who bring a sense of fun to the classroom.

What support is available to staff at your school (from within the school or elsewhere)?

Staff Well-being team, time-off to attend important events (e.g. own child's Sports Day) and counselling support via Educational Mutual.
