About the role
Teacher of Food & Nutrition - Part Time or Full Time considered. This post is for September 2019 but we will happily discuss a different starting date.
Townsend is a small and very friendly secondary school (c640 currently on roll with c100 in the 6th Form) sitting on the edge of the historic Cathedral City of St Albans. The school is situated within easy reach of the M25, M1, A1 and close to fast main line train links to London. We have a lovely 15 acre site with countryside on three sides. Although this is a Church School you do not have to adhere to the Christian faith to work here but you need to be in sympathy with our work. Staff find the warmth of the welcome and the support from members of staff and the parents association creates a very supportive atmosphere.
We are looking to recruit a part time or full time teacher of Food & Nutrition. This post would suit an either experienced colleague looking for a new experience, a newly qualified teacher, or someone returning to the profession, as long as you will be able to quickly demonstrate impact and the ability to support the team. We would also be interested in hearing from teachers who can offer other subjects or areas of whole school experience.
Due to our location Townsend is able to offer the higher London Fringe Pay Spine to all staff.
Although this is a main scale position we are happy to pay either on the main scale or on the Upper Pay Spine salary if you have already crossed the Threshold and moved to this level in your current or previous school.
Townsend offers excellent support and professional programme opportunities for all staff.
We are looking for an aspirational teacher with a passion for the subject, a desire to succeed and an ambition to ensure DT/Food becomes a leading subject at Townsend. Candidates with all levels of experience will be considered – those with significant teaching experience, people looking for a new challenge, those returning to the profession, or those looking for their first step into teaching - but primarily the post should attract those who are wanting to further raise standards, who enjoy working as part of a team, have a creative mind, a commitment to young people, a willingness for flexibility, and who will care for our lovely facilities. An ability to teach Food related aspects at Key Stage 3 and to at least GCSE level is essential. It is not essential but an ability to teach more than one other DT subject at Key stage 3 and/or Key stage 4 would be an advantage as the subject area develops and grows. Other non DT second subjects would also willingly be considered.
All of our students enjoy participating in the range of DT subjects throughout years 7 and 8 before indicating their GCSE choices. We currently teach Food and Nutrition, Textiles, and Design Technology/Product Design in Key Stage 4 as the cohort size determines.
The subject lends itself to cross curricular work as well as being a significant subject in helping children prepare themselves for life after school. Currently there is some opportunity for learning beyond the classroom but we would support further involvement with appropriate external links including competitions.
If you are interested in the role but would like further information, please do feel free to contact the school to speak with Mr Wellbeloved Headteacher or Miss Lingwood Deputy Headteacher. You are also very welcome to visit us or to speak with our Head of Technology.
We want our DT department to be a key subject area and to play a central role in our daily school life in Key Stages 3 and 4 and the 6th form. We want students of all abilities to enjoy the subject throughout the school. Teachers are very supportive of each other in our school and we have a lovely purposeful, caring and sharing attitude among the staff, and with supportive but real academic rigor and challenge for students. Many colleagues participate regularly in the activities of our school Teaching and Learning group. The school is a lovely place to work. Please read our last two Ofsted reports and look at our website to get a feel for our school.
There are dedicated specialist teaching and learning areas for DT housed in their own purpose-built building. All of these areas were extensively remodeled, refurbished and reequipped to a high standard just four years ago. The food teaching areas are of a very high standard with facilities that many consider are excellent - and many believe above average for DT usually found in schools. The area is well-resourced and with good computer technology to support good learning. Rooms have fibre-optic cable broadband internet access and interactive whiteboards. There is also a Wi-Fi network in the area and a class set of new dedicated DT laptop computers available in the DT Centre. Additionally, our Independent Learning Discovery Centre and well-resourced library is available to all curriculum areas to support independent work and to further learning, or for students to use one of the Discovery Centre's 50 wireless laptop computers, or 30 desktop computers, to support their learning. Our six computer rooms can also be booked for class use and all staff are issued with a laptop computer to aid preparation for learning and administration.
Townsend is rated as GOOD in all areas by Ofsted. We urge you to read our Ofsted reports to get a feel for this nice school. Also our Section 48 OUTSTANDING inspection report also makes exceptional reading and both can be seen on our website http://www.townsend.herts.sch.uk
