The Purcell School

Secondary Hertsmere Borough

The Purcell School is an independent co-educational day and boarding school for young musicians aged 10 to 18, and Britain’s oldest music school. Based on the outskirts of London, in Bushey, Hertfordshire, the School provides a rounded education with music at its heart to approximately 180 talented young players, singers and composers.

The mission of The Purcell School is to provide young musicians who demonstrate the potential to become exceptional, irrespective of background, with outstanding teaching within a supportive school environment and to equip them with the self-confidence, adaptability, maturity and perspective to sustain their professional development and personal fulfilment throughout their lives.

In our latest ISI inspection report in May 2022, the school achieved the highest possible grading in all categories - both the quality of students’ academic and other achievements and their personal development was judged to be excellent (the highest ISI grading).

The excellent personal development of our students, as noted in the inspection report, is ‘due to the strong commitment of senior leaders, school governors and staff providing high levels of support’…’supported by the leadership having created a culture of openness, integration and acceptance’.

Celebrated throughout the world as a centre of musical excellence, The Purcell School is a unique, vibrant, innovative and exhilarating place to work or study.  We are a close-knit community dedicated to nurturing some of the world’s most talented young musicians and we recognize the unique privilege it is to work with these incredibly gifted students.

As a boarding school, a specialist music organisation and a charity we have a diverse team of staff working across many dedicated areas, such as, Music, Academics, Pastoral, Fundraising, Maintenance and Housekeeping.

The Purcell School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

The Purcell School is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from appropriately qualified persons regardless of gender, marital status, sexual orientation, race, ethnic origin, colour, nationality, religion, disability or age.
