About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a background in Art, Product Design, or a related field, ideally with some experience or interest in ceramics.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting classroom learning, preparing materials and resources, maintaining equipment, and ensuring a safe, organised, and inspiring environment for our pupils to explore their creativity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist teaching staff in the delivery of Art and DT lessons, providing in-class support to pupils where needed.

  • Deliver a weekly co-curricular art club for our younger learners.

  • Prepare materials, tools, and resources ahead of lessons in both departments including teaching and learning resources as well as produce examples for lesson demonstrations.

  • Manage the school kiln, including loading, firing, and unloading ceramics safely and efficiently.

  • Support the ceramics curriculum by helping children with clay work, glazing, and finishing techniques.

  • Keep accurate firing schedules and ensure regular kiln maintenance for safe and effective operation.

  • Manage and maintain equipment and tools, ensuring they are in good working order and stored safely and neatly.

  • Regularly check and maintain equipment and materials. Monitor stock levels, order new materials and equipment as needed and liaise with suppliers.

  • Ensure health and safety standards are upheld in both Art and DT workspaces, keep files updated with relevant risk assessments and COSHH data and to ensure safe disposal of waste.

  • Maintain a clean, tidy, and inspiring working environment across both departments.

  • Carry out administrative and other functions related to the smooth running of both departments.  

  • Create inventive, dynamic and informative Art and DT displays that showcase the work of the departments, display student work around the school and help prepare for open mornings and art exhibitions.

  • Assist with drama productions; for example: making costumes and props.

  • Help prepare the portfolios and provide support for our Art and DT scholarship pupils.

  • Co-ordinate with the Heads of Department to assist in planning for our termly STEAM days, educational trips and visits and workshops by visiting artists and engineers.

  • Support cover teachers and pupils in Art and DT cover lessons as and when necessary.

  • Undertake any other reasonable duties and responsibilities as may be required by the Senior Leadership Team or Art and DT Subject Leaders.
