Chair of Governors

About the role

Furneux Pelham school sits in the heart of the community in the village of Furneux Pelham welcoming families from the areas of Buntingford and Bishop’s Stortford.  It is a happy, caring and inclusive school where all the pupils feel valued, respected and safe. 

Our governors come from a range of different backgrounds, skills and experience but all share a common interest of wanting the best possible education for the children in our school.   We are currently looking for new Chair of governors to work closely with the Headteacher to support, help and advise in setting a clear vision and strategy for the future growth and development of the school.   

Our new Chair will demonstrate a good understanding of a school environment and the role of the governing body within in, have exemplary communication skills and the highest level of honesty and integrity.  Previous experience of school governance is essential.   

We are seeking a candidate who is able to: 

• lead an effective governing board in monitoring and implementing the school vision and strategy; 

• chair meetings and set the governing body agenda; 

• build professional relationships with the headteacher and other stakeholders; 

• hold honest and open conversations to motivate accountability; 

• lead the board in the focus of strategic priorities and promote the continuous improvement of progress and outcomes throughout the school. 

You will be expected to attend six full governing body meetings plus an additional ten committee meetings each year.  You will also be expected to represent the governing body at various other events in the school calendar.
