About the role

The successful candidate will have a passion for building positive relationships with young people to help them achieve more than they thought possible.

A cover supervisor will cover lessons across all Key Stages in the absence of the class teacher.

Where no cover lessons are scheduled the Cover Supervisor would be expected to participate in small group or individual intervention sessions with students across the age and ability range or support departments with administrative tasks.

While previous experience working in a school setting is desirable, it is not essential. Full training and support will be provided upon appointment.

This position is also ideal as a first step for anyone considering a career in teaching. We have an excellent record in training teachers on a varieties of pathways into the profession.

Job Description - Main Purpose of the Role

The Cover Supervisor will provide classroom supervision during the short-term absence of teaching staff, ensuring that students continue to learn and make progress.

The postholder will work collaboratively with subject leaders, teachers, and support staff to deliver high-quality learning experiences and maintain a positive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise classes during the short-term absence of teachers, following set work and lesson plans

  • Liaise effectively with subject leaders, teachers and support staff to ensure continuity of learning

  • Provide clear instructions and oversee student work, maintaining focus and engagement

  • Manage classroom behaviour in line with the school's behaviour policy

  • Respond to student questions, providing guidance and support as needed

  • Handle emergencies or incidents in accordance with school policies and procedures

  • Collect completed student work, providing feedback to teaching staff

  • Act as a cover teaching assistant or assist with administrative tasks when no classroom cover is required

  • Contribute to the wider life of the school, supporting students' personal development and wellbeing

Person Specification - Qualifications and Training

  • Good standard of general education (minimum GCSEs in English and Maths or equivalent)

  • Evidence of ongoing professional development is desirable

Experience

  • Experience of working with secondary-age students (in a paid or voluntary capacity) is desirable

  • Experience of managing groups of young people is an advantage

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to deliver clear instructions and supervise classes effectively

  • Good understanding of classroom management and positive behaviour strategies

  • Confident communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work flexibly and respond calmly to unexpected situations

  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail

  • Ability to use basic IT systems and software
