Salary: H7 Point 19 – 23; Full Time Equivalent: £33,106 - £35,479; Actual Salary: £25,830.09 - £27,681.56

Closing Date: 20 November 2026

This is a role for someone who can step into lessons across the school, keep students on task and learning, and provide clear, calm cover in the absence of classroom teachers. You will work with the Cover Manager to deliver taught activities set by teachers, adapt tasks when needed, manage behaviour consistently and support students to make progress. This post suits someone comfortable supervising secondary-aged pupils, confident explaining tasks, and able to switch between subjects and year groups at short notice.

What you'll be doing

  • Supervise and manage classes during planned and short-notice cover, ensuring students remain engaged and complete the work set.

  • Explain tasks clearly and, where required, adapt or improvise activities so lessons remain productive.

  • Provide help to students individually or in small groups to support task completion.

  • Maintain a calm learning environment using established behaviour-for-learning routines and the school behaviour policy.

  • Complete lesson administration, record-keeping and evaluate cover sessions; give constructive feedback to the regular classroom teacher.

  • Carry out duties as required by the school timetable (including three duties per week) and support other reasonable duties such as covering Reception when needed.

  • Follow safeguarding, health and safety procedures and promote student welfare at all times.

What we're looking for

Essential

  • Experience of working with secondary-aged students or supervising lessons in a school or similar setting.

  • Strong verbal communication and classroom management skills; able to keep classes focused and learning.

  • Ability to explain tasks clearly and to support students with different needs during a lesson.

  • Reliable, punctual and able to adapt quickly to changing daily requirements.

  • Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and commitment to promoting pupil welfare.

Desirable

  • Degree-level qualification.

  • Strong subject knowledge in one or more curriculum areas that would support cover in those subjects.

  • Experience of providing written feedback to teachers following cover lessons.

About the team or department

You will be part of the Cover Team at Goffs Academy, reporting to the Cover Manager. The team works across years 7–13 to maintain continuity of learning when teaching staff are absent and is closely linked with pastoral staff and the Senior Leadership Team to uphold behaviour and safeguarding expectations.

What we offer

  • A modern working environment: a new school building (opened January 2017) and additional facilities from April 2022, including a fitness centre partnership with Lifestyle Fitness.

  • High-quality, personalised professional development and clear career development pathways, including routes into teacher training and leadership development within the Trust.

  • Staff benefits including substantially discounted membership and free access to the on-site gym, cycle-to-work scheme, Employee Assistance Programme, occupational health, free flu jabs, subsidised nursery provision, and membership of appropriate pension schemes for eligible staff.

  • A collaborative multi-academy trust with opportunities to work across schools and access centralised support and CPD.
