King James Academy Royston is a thriving 9–16 through school located in the heart of Royston, Hertfordshire. We are committed to fostering creativity, practical skills and independence across all areas of the curriculum. Our well-equipped Design & Technology, Food, and Art departments are integral to our students’ educational journey, and we are seeking a dedicated and proactive technician to support their continued success. Our school was rated as “Good” in our 2024 Ofsted inspection.

The Role

We are looking for enthusiastic and well-organised technicians to support the delivery of high-quality teaching in Design & Technology (including Food Technology) and Art. You will work closely with subject teachers to prepare and maintain equipment, resources and materials, ensure a safe working environment, and provide technical support during lessons where required. A willingness to work across all teams is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare, set up and maintain tools, machinery, materials and ingredients for practical lessons in DT, Food and Art

Carry out daily and weekly checks on all machinery, tools and equipment in the workshops and stores, ensuring safety and functionality

Assist teaching staff in practical sessions, providing technical support to students where appropriate

Ensure all machinery and equipment is cleaned, maintained (sharpened if necessary) and used in accordance with Health & Safety regulations

Monitor and manage stock levels, placing orders (communicating with teaching staff/HOD) and maintaining inventories

Support with the display of student work and maintaining a visually engaging department

Carry out routine safety checks and inspections, including risk assessments and COSHH compliance

Assist in the development and preparation of teaching resources

Ensure safe storage and disposal of materials, chemicals, and ingredients

Support the use and maintenance of specialist equipment, such as laser cutters, 3D printers, ovens, sewing machines, kilns etc. (training can be provided)

Support the smooth operation of our DT food room, preparing ingredients and resources and supporting a clean, hygienic and efficient environment for cooking lessons. You will also support Art staff with materials, preparation and display tasks.

Use IT systems to manage stock orders, deliveries and storage of food items. Create ingredient lists and assist with lesson planning.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have: Experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Design & Technology, Food Technology, Art A practical, hands-on approach and the ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong organisational and communication skills A good understanding of Health & Safety practices in a school or workshop environment Willingness to undertake relevant training (e.g. food hygiene, machine safety) Previous experience in a similar school-based role is desirable but not essential.
