Are you a passionate and experienced pastoral leader ready to make a significant impact on the personal and educational development of young people? Hertswood Academy is seeking a Deputy Head of Key Stage to join our dedicated team and help shape the future of our students.


The Role

As Deputy Head of Key Stage, you will work directly under the guidance of a Head of Key Stage to lead and manage the personal and educational development of individual students across a key stage. This is a crucial leadership role that combines strategic oversight with direct student support, focusing on their well-being, progress, and overall success.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading and Vision Setting: Supporting the Head of Key Stage in communicating a clear vision for student development to staff, students, parents, and governors.

  • Planning and Expectations: Assisting in setting challenging targets for student attendance, behaviour, and academic achievement, and collaborating with staff to ensure these are met.

  • Student Support & Learning: Ensuring consistency in students' attitudes to learning, promoting active participation in lessons, and developing a wide range of enrichment activities.

  • Assessment & Evaluation: Contributing to clear policies for assessing student achievement and monitoring progress, using data to inform interventions.

  • Student Achievement: Identifying and supporting underachieving students through effective action plans.

  • Stakeholder Relationships: Building strong partnerships with parents and the wider community to enhance student experiences and development.

  • Staff Development: Supporting staff in managing individual student needs and contributing to their professional development.

  • Resource Management: Leading Tutor Team meetings and ensuring the effective deployment of resources, including staff supporting students with SEND.

  • Strategic Leadership: Contributing to the development and implementation of key stage policies that reflect the school's commitment to high standards.


About You

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled individual with a proven track record in pastoral leadership.

You will need:

  • Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a relevant degree.

  • Experience:

    • Significant experience in a pastoral leadership role within a secondary school (e.g., Head of Year, Head of Key Stage, Pastoral Lead).

    • Experience as a middle leader in a teaching capacity.

    • A demonstrated history of improving student behaviour, attendance, and welfare.

    • Experience in leading, motivating, and developing a team.

    • Proven ability to work effectively with parents/carers and external agencies.

    • Experience using data analysis to inform pastoral interventions and evaluate impact.

  • Skills & Abilities:

    • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively with all stakeholders.

    • Strong leadership and management abilities with the capacity to inspire and empower others.

    • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise under pressure.

    • Analytical and problem-solving skills, with a solution-focused approach.

    • Resilience and empathy in challenging situations and when supporting vulnerable students.

    • A clear understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.

    • Proficiency in school management information systems

    Please note this position is exclusively open to members of staff who hold a QTS and have been part of the middle leadership team.
