About the role

Longdean School

Director of Learning - Mathematics

MPS/UPS - TLR 1d

Full Time - Permanent

Start date: January 2027

Are you ready to lead a department where mathematics doesn't just get taught — it gets brought to life? We're looking for an ambitious, inspirational Head of Mathematics to take the reins of a thriving faculty that stretches from Key Stage 3 right through to A Level and Further Mathematics, underpinned by a specialist STEM stream that sets our younger mathematicians on the path to greatness from day one.

This is a rare opportunity for a strategic, subject-passionate leader to shape curriculum, culture, and outcomes across the full 11-18 journey — and to do it with the backing of a school that genuinely invests in its leaders.

You'll bring a genuine creative vision for what a Mathematics department can be, and the strategic leadership skills to turn that vision into results. As an outstanding practitioner yourself, you'll set the standard for teaching across the department — coaching colleagues, sharpening curriculum from Year 7 through to Year 13, and making sure every student gets the teaching they deserve, whether they're finding their feet in our STEM stream, working towards Core Maths, or pushing for the top grade in Further Mathematics.

In return, you'll join a school that takes staff development as seriously as it does student outcomes. Our induction and professional development programme is built to help leaders thrive, not just survive, and you'll be backed by engaged colleagues, motivated students, and the facilities and resources to let you focus on teaching — not on fighting your environment.

Longdean School is a good school (Ofsted, March 2025), and we're not resting there. We live our values of Pride, Perseverance, Ambition and Respect through all of our work; we teach and prepare our young people to have resilience and confidence, to accept and respond to challenges, to build an enduring passion for learning, and to become independent thinkers with respect for themselves and others — and we need a Head of Mathematics who shares these values and is ambitious for all in our community. Longdean School is proud to work within Scholars’ Education Trust.

Diversity: Scholars’ Education Trust is fully committed to the principles of equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion. We want to attract and retain the very best staff in all areas of the trust, ensuring our staff body reflects the diversity of our students and local community.

Date of Interview: Wednesday, 7 October 2026
