About the role

Can you be the trusted adult who helps a child feel safe, understood and ready to learn?

At Abel Smith School, we believe that children thrive when they feel happy, secure and connected. We are looking for an exceptional Pastoral Support Co-ordinator to join our team and play a key role in supporting pupils' social, emotional and behavioural development.

This is a rewarding role for someone who understands that behaviour is communication and who is committed to helping children overcome barriers that may be preventing them from fully accessing school life.

Working closely with the Headteacher, SENCO, teachers, families and external agencies, you will provide targeted support for pupils who may be experiencing social, emotional, mental health, attendance or wellbeing challenges. You will be a visible and approachable presence across the school, helping pupils regulate emotions, build resilience, develop positive relationships and successfully engage in learning.

No two days will be the same. One moment you may be welcoming an anxious child into school and helping them settle into their day; the next you could be supporting a pupil through a difficult situation, facilitating a restorative conversation or working with families to put the right support in place.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Warm, compassionate and approachable

  • Calm under pressure and able to build trusting relationships with children and families

  • Organised, proactive and resilient

  • Skilled at working collaboratively with colleagues and external professionals

  • Able to maintain high expectations whilst supporting children with empathy and understanding

  • Committed to inclusion and ensuring every child feels valued and successful

  • Willing to undertake training and continuously develop their practice

Experience working with children, particularly those with social, emotional or behavioural needs, would be advantageous. However, most important is your ability to connect with children, see beyond behaviours and help them develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

In return, you will join a supportive and dedicated staff team where relationships matter, inclusion is central to our ethos and pastoral support is recognised as a crucial part of helping every child achieve their full potential.

If you are passionate about making a lasting difference to children's lives and want to work in a school where every child is known, valued and supported, we would love to hear from you.

This role is for 31 hours, term time only.

Visits to the school are warmly encouraged.

Abel Smith School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
