School Governor (2 co-opted vacancies)

Apply for this job

About the role

Would you like to make a valuable contribution to local children’s education, opportunities and futures? If yes, we are looking to appoint two new School Governors!

We currently have vacancies for two Co-opted Governors and welcome interest from members of the community who are keen to make a positive contribution to our school.

Being a school governor is a challenging but hugely rewarding role. It will give you the chance to make a real difference to young people, give something back to your local community and use and develop your skills in a board-level environment. You will also be joining the largest volunteer force in the country; there are over a quarter of a million volunteers governing state funded schools in England.

The voluntary role of Governor works as part of a team and plays a vital role in ensuring the Governing Committee is connected with parents and the community.

What do does a Governor do?

The governing board provides strategic leadership and accountability in school. It has three key functions:

  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction

What will be expected of you?

Time commitment varies depending on the needs of the school and the role you choose to take on. Commitments include:

  • Termly full governing board meetings
  • School visits and/or meetings with staff and students
  • Background reading and administration
  • Attendance at training courses

Being a Governor is a “hands off” role – decisions made by Governors influence the whole school, but Governors are not responsible for, or involved in, the day-to-day running of the school. For an information discussion regarding the role please contact the Chair of Governors (via the school office) or the Clerk to Governors at clerking@swallowdell.herts.sch.uk

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

All post holders are subject safeguarding checks, including a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, satisfactory references.
