Join The Astley Cooper School and make a real difference to young people

Are you passionate about science? Do you enjoy working in a practical environment and supporting young people to develop their scientific knowledge and understanding?

The Astley Cooper School is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Senior Science Technician / Science Technician to join our established and supportive Science Department.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced technician looking to take the next step in their career, or for a skilled and enthusiastic Science Technician who wants to develop their expertise within a busy and successful secondary school.

As part of our Science Department, you will play an important role in supporting high-quality teaching and learning. You will help ensure that practical lessons are well prepared, safe and engaging, enabling our students to develop their curiosity, practical skills and enthusiasm for science.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who are organised, practical and enthusiastic about science, with a commitment to providing an excellent service to both staff and students.

About The Astley Cooper School

The Astley Cooper School is an increasingly popular and oversubscribed secondary school in Hemel Hempstead. We are proud of our diverse school community and are committed to providing the very best opportunities for every student and member of staff.

Situated on the edge of Hemel Hempstead, the school benefits from excellent transport links, with easy access to the M1 and M25 as well as the local train station.

We are continuing to build a strong culture of success, with high expectations for all our students. Our aim is that every young person leaves us as a successful, well-rounded and confident individual, ready to take their next steps and succeed in the modern world.

Working in our school can be challenging, but that is also what makes it so rewarding. Our challenges are significant, but they are exactly why we love working here.

The successful candidate will

  • Have a genuine interest in science and practical science education.
  • Be organised, reliable and able to manage and prioritise a varied workload.
  • Prepare and set up equipment and materials for practical lessons, ensuring that activities are ready to a high standard.
  • Have a strong understanding of health and safety and the safe use, storage and handling of chemicals, equipment and other scientific materials.
  • Be confident working independently while also contributing positively to a supportive department.
  • Have good practical and technical skills and an ability to troubleshoot problems effectively.
  • Be committed to supporting teachers and students to ensure practical lessons run smoothly and successfully.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure laboratories, preparation areas and equipment are well organised and maintained.
  • Be willing to contribute positively to the wider life and development of the Science Department.

For the Senior Science Technician role, we would particularly welcome candidates who can demonstrate experience of working at a high level within a science department, supporting colleagues, managing resources and equipment, and taking responsibility for the effective organisation of practical science.

Experience of working within a school or educational setting would be an advantage, but we are also interested in candidates with relevant laboratory, scientific or technical experience who can demonstrate transferable skills and a commitment to supporting young people.
