About the role

Haywood Grove is a primary special school for children aged 5–11 with social, emotional and mental health needs. Our school has grown, and we are creating a practical new role to help us care for our expanded site and help children get to school when transport is a barrier.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in keeping a school safe, tidy and ready for use. You will work across our buildings and outdoor spaces, spotting what needs attention, completing agreed practical jobs and working alongside our Site Manager.

You will also drive the school vehicle to collect or take pupils home or to off-site provision when needed. For some children, getting into a vehicle and arriving at school is a significant part of their day. We need someone who is dependable, patient and calm: a person who can offer a warm welcome, follow each child’s agreed plan and respond safely when things do not go as expected.

You may have worked in premises, facilities, transport, a school or a care setting. What matters most is that you are practical and self-motivated, drive safely, communicate well and understand that every child deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Experience with children with additional needs would be valuable, and we will provide role-specific training.

This is a varied, active, year-round role. The balance of site work and pupil transport will change with the school’s needs. A full driving licence suitable for the school vehicle (mini-bus) is essential.

Our strapline is “Proud to be special, proud to be different.” If you would enjoy helping to make Haywood Grove a safe, welcoming place every day, we would like to hear from you.

Our school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and shortlisted candidates will be asked to share any relevant criminal history prior to interview.

The successful applicant will also be subject to enhanced DBS and barred list checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education.
