About the role
Teacher of PE – Part time (0.60) (maternity leave)
Main or Upper Pay Scale
Start date: October 2025 or January 2026
Hitchin Girls’ School is a high performing school, graded Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted, where we provide an exceptional experience for all of our students. We have high level provision for teaching and learning and provide the greatest level of care and support for all students and our staff. Situated in the picturesque and historic market town of Hitchin, it is conveniently located in the beautiful countryside just 25 minutes from London by train and with easy access to motorways and airports.
We are seeking a talented and passionate individual to join our team as a part time Teacher of PE from October 2025/January 2026 on a maternity cover. You will either be an experienced practitioner with excellent pedagogical knowledge and communication skills or have the potential to develop into such a practitioner. The ability to teach a range of sports at KS3/KS4 is essential and deliver a programme of Sports Leadership. A commitment to extra-curricular activities and fixtures would be required - knowledge and experience in either netball, hockey, gymnastics and football would be advantageous.
The PE Department at Hitchin Girls’ School is a very special place to teach. As well as offering breadth and depth of activities at KS3, we have varied options at KS4. Students can choose non-examined PE, where they participate in a range of familiar activities and new ones such as handball and self defence. Alternatively they can select Sports Leaders L1 and L2. Students may also opt to study full course GCSE PE. The Sports Leaders course is also offered across key stages 4 and 5 at Level 1, 2 and 3 providing opportunities for students to lead in school, at local primary schools and at sporting festivals. We offer GCSE PE (Edexcel), GCSE dance (AQA) and A Level PE (OCR) which is taught very successfully across our Consortium. We pride ourselves on having a full extra-curricular programme at lunchtimes and after school, with great success in fixtures and competitions at local level, and students compete at district to national level in a number of activities. We organise trips to sporting and educational events, as well as a bi-yearly sports tour to Valkenburg in Holland for hockey, netball and football which students and staff really enjoy and benefit from.
We can offer you:
a secure, supportive environment with a full induction programme for all new staff
outstanding professional development and future career opportunities
a positive working environment within an extremely well-resourced school
the chance to work with exceptionally committed colleagues who have high expectations of students
an active focus on staff well-being, supporting staff throughout the year with various treats/initiatives
access to the school’s children of staff admission rule
a cycle to work scheme
The appointment would suit an experienced teacher or an ECT as the school provides a thorough and successful training programme. This is an outstanding opportunity for someone who wants to join a high performing school and gain significant experience to further enhance their career.
