About the role

We are looking to appoint a friendly, enthusiastic and patient person who is passionate about supporting children to be the very best they can be.

This is a part-time position for two days per week, with working hours of 8.45am–3.20pm.

The successful candidate could be supporting pupils in any class across the school or working on a one-to-one basis, including with children with complex needs. The role involves supporting pupils’ learning during lessons and delivering interventions to individuals and small groups of children.

Applicants should ideally have previous experience of working with children. A Level 2 NVQ in Children’s Care, Learning and Development or Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (or an equivalent qualification) is desirable, but not essential. Candidates should be confident in their English and mathematics skills and hold at least a Grade C (or equivalent) in GCSE English and Mathematics.

A willingness to learn, the ability to establish clear boundaries and the capacity to work effectively as part of a team are essential. Liaison with teachers, teaching assistants and the SENCO is an important aspect of the role. Appropriate training and support will be provided.

We offer the opportunity to work as part of a skilled and dedicated team. We can offer:

• friendly and supportive colleagues
• motivated and respectful pupils
• a commitment to continuing professional development
• a happy and positive working environment
• strong links with St Albans Cathedral.

The Abbey CE VA Primary School is a popular voluntary aided school with a strong Christian foundation and close links with St Albans Cathedral and its parish church. Our Christian vision and values are evident in every aspect of school life, and our SIAMS inspection in October 2025 confirmed that all areas were fully met.

In April 2025, Ofsted judged the school to be Good in Overall Effectiveness and in all five areas inspected, with no areas for improvement identified – an achievement of which we are very proud.

We are committed to maintaining high standards of attainment while nurturing a caring and inclusive Christian ethos. Together, we create a positive and engaging learning environment where children are happy, confident and inspired to do their best.

We greatly value the commitment of our dedicated staff, supportive governors, engaged parents and active Friends’ Association, all of whom contribute to the life and success of our school.

Visitors to the school are always welcome.

Applications may be considered while the post is being advertised.

Abbey School is an equal opportunities employer.  The school has a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  The successful candidate will be required to undertake child protection screening including checks with past employers and an Enhanced Disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service.
