Meet Family Worker, Catherine

Meet Catherine, a Family Worker.

Please can you describe your journey into education?

In 2023, after many years of working in the private sector, I decided I wanted a completely new challenge. I had helped in my sons’ schools over the years and had always enjoyed it, so I decided a job in a school would be a good option.

I automatically looked at vacancies in school offices, but this was just swapping one desk job for another. There were several vacancies for class TA’s and from looking at the job descriptions and requirements I thought that could be a job I’d enjoy. I was offered a place at a school, working with a child with an EHCP, and the following academic year moved to a class TA.

I became a Family Worker at the school earlier this year and enjoy the real mix of working alongside the children, but also getting to know their families, and helping our school give back to the local community too.

What are they key things you love about your job?

I know it’s a cliché, but every day working in a school really is different. In the past year I have helped organise MacMillan coffee mornings, taken part in our school Summer Strictly Dance competition, organised stay and play sessions for families in the local community, been to a Hindu temple, visited museums and parks, enjoyed Christmas shows and Sports days and tournaments. I didn’t have this much day to day variety in my old office job!

But the best thing about my job is working with the children. If you are having a bad day, the children will always manage to cheer you up. Their enthusiasm and sense of fun is infectious!  Being able to offer families support and guidance is incredibly rewarding too.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to work in a similar role?

Go for it! Keep an eye on your local school vacancies and have a chat with the school office if you see a position that you feel you would like. They’ll always be happy to help you and offer advice.
