About the role

Become a School Governor at Longlands Primary School, Turnford

Longlands Primary School is a small, friendly school in Turnford, Hertfordshire, rated Outstanding by Ofsted in both 2018 and 2024. We are currently seeking a committed individual to join our governing board and help shape the future of our school.

School governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the UK. They provide schools with strategic leadership and accountability for educational and financial performance. As a governor, you will play a key role in:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding school leaders to account for the educational performance of pupils and staff
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and ensuring money is well spent

Responsibilities include:

  • Helping to develop and embed the school’s vision and strategy
  • Promoting high educational standards and supporting staff and pupil wellbeing
  • Monitoring the school’s curriculum, including provision for pupils with SEND
  • Evaluating educational performance using a range of data
  • Approving and reviewing policies and budgets
  • Supporting and challenging the headteacher
  • Ensuring legal compliance and monitoring health and safety

Governors are linked to a specific area of the school, such as a curriculum subject or strategic priority, and are expected to visit the school at least three times per year to meet with staff and observe practice.

Time commitment

The full governing board meets six times per year, once per half term, alternating between in-person and online meetings held in the evenings. Governors are expected to prepare for meetings by reading papers and preparing questions. The term of office is four years, and training is provided to support you in the role.
