About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Specialist Teaching Assistant to join our team and provide tailored support for a child who is deaf and has recently received a cochlear implant. The child is joining our specialist unit and will need consistent care and support to settle, build confidence, and fully engage with learning. This is a rewarding role where you will make a real difference to a child’s progress, independence, and inclusion in school life.The Role

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support within the classroom and within the unit setting. Work closely with the class teacher, the on-site Teacher of the Deaf, and the unit team to ensure learning is accessible and engaging.
  • Support the development of literacy, numeracy, and speech and language skills, using strategies that build communication, focus, and independence.
  • Provide structured support to develop attention, self-regulation, and executive functioning skills, helping the child to manage behaviour, organise learning, and sustain engagement.
  • Offer pastoral support to help the child feel safe, included, and motivated to learn.
  • Adapt resources and use a variety of approaches to meet individual learning needs.
  • Encourage social interaction and participation, helping the child to build positive relationships and confidence.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Patient, creative, and adaptable in their approach, with a calm and supportive manner.
    Experienced in supporting children with additional communication, learning, or behavioural needs (experience with deaf learners or cochlear implants is highly desirable).
  • Skilled in promoting focus, motivation, and strategies that support behaviour, organisation, and independence.
  • Able to build strong, trusting relationships with children, staff, and parents.
    Committed to inclusion and passionate about helping every child reach their potential.

 The daily hours worked will be from 8.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays.  There can be some flexibility over the hours / days, to allow for individual circumstances.  The start and end times can be discussed on the selection day. The salary will be on either H2 or H3 depending on suitable experience and qualifications of the candidate.  This contract is linked to a specific child with an EHCP. A contract extension would be subject to budget and school requirements. The role is for an immediate start. The closing date for applications will be Noon on Monday, September 22nd. A Selection Day will be held on Wednesday, September 24th. Candidates invited to attend the Selection Day will be asked to lead a Busy Fingers activity of their choice (10 minutes maximum) with a small group of KS1 Unit children. This will be followed by a formal interview. 

The successful candidate will be asked to complete a Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure Application form and undertake an online health check by Occupation Health. Maple School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
