About the role

Join the Barley Barkway First Schools Federation – January 2027

Are you an enthusiastic, caring and creative teacher looking for an exciting new opportunity? Do you dream of working in a welcoming village school where children are known as individuals, curiosity is celebrated and every child is supported to achieve their very best?

Nestled in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, Barley and Barkway First Schools Federation brings together two small village schools with a shared vision, strong community roots and a commitment to helping every child flourish. We are seeking a passionate teacher to join our team at Barley School from January 2027, teaching our Year 2 class. We are looking for someone who shares our enthusiasm for making learning engaging, meaningful and memorable.

This is a wonderful opportunity to make a real difference at a pivotal stage in children's learning, helping them develop confidence, independence and a lifelong love of learning as they prepare for the next exciting step in their educational journey. Our Year 2 class has just 12 children, supported by two additional adults in the classroom, offering a fantastic opportunity to build meaningful relationships, tailor learning to individual needs and celebrate every child's progress.

Learning at Barley and Barkway Federation extends far beyond the classroom. Our children benefit from two specialist PE lessons each week, specialist art teaching and visits from a yoga teacher, providing rich opportunities to develop creativity, physical skills and wellbeing. We are passionate about offering a broad, engaging curriculum that inspires curiosity, builds confidence and helps children discover their individual strengths.

We are incredibly proud of our caring, collaborative team and the positive culture we are building across the federation. Our September 2026 Ofsted inspection recognised the value placed on staff, highlighting that colleagues feel appreciated and valued. We are committed to staff wellbeing, professional development and creating a supportive working environment where everyone's contribution matters. As a small federation, we work closely together, share expertise and celebrate successes, ensuring that staff feel part of a team and have opportunities to grow professionally.

We are looking for a teacher who brings energy, imagination and warmth to the classroom, builds positive relationships with children and families, and enjoys being part of a close-knit school community. Above all, we want our children to feel safe, valued, inspired and excited to come to school each day. Our Christian vision, Living Life in All Its Fullness, underpins our commitment to nurturing the whole child and enabling every member of our school community to flourish.

We warmly encourage prospective applicants to discover more about our federation by visiting our website: www.barleybarkway.herts.sch.uk. Visits to our Federation and an opportunity to meet the Headteacher are warmly welcomed. We would love to show you our federation, introduce you to our team, share our vision and answer any questions you may have.

Although we are ideally looking for someone to join us in January 2027, we recognise that existing work commitments and notice periods may make this difficult. If you are excited about the opportunity but would be unable to start in January, we would still warmly encourage you to apply. We would love to hear from the right person and are happy to discuss individual circumstances.

If you are ready to bring your enthusiasm, expertise and creativity to our wonderful village federation, we would love to hear from you.

Please note: Due to the nature and requirements of this role, we are currently unable to offer part-time working or a job-share arrangement.

Our school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and shortlisted candidates will be asked to share any relevant criminal history prior to interview.

The successful applicant will also be subject to enhanced DBS and barred list checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education.
